COTHROMACH

SEELIE REFUGE

To the east of Caer Glaem lies a city built right into the mountainside by the Seelie, mined by the dwarf lords of old and refined by the aelfen. It is the eastern outpost of Glaschu and lies deep within the heart of the Spineback Mountains. The entrance lies on its western front on a trail directly from Caer Glaem and at its doors stand an iron dwarf and elf dressed in identical armour, promoting unity of the races. It is a fair city and somehow the aelfen people have managed to blend their penchant for light and airiness into the dwarven strength that has ensured Cothromach's survival for over a thousand years. In times of crisis, Seelie come here for refuge. Mountain streams run through it and naiads like to play with anyone walking over the bridges of the elegant subterranean city.

( CHARACTER ★ INFORMATION )

NAME & AGE: Loras Tyrell, Age 20ish
CANON & CANON POINT: A Feast For Crows, at the exact moment oil is poured over him. :)
CANON INFORMATION: here

PERSONALITY:

Loras Tyrell is the third son and the House Tyrell. His family is proud, second in wealth only to the Lannisters. Due to this, he could have head relatively easy life in Highgarden, living out his days as a spoiled Lord, without many cares until the war came down. It is to his credit that he didn’t choose that. He has always been a man who wished for glory, for all the things that a true chivalrous knight could become. Loras has trained to be a fighter since he was a child, first as the squire to Renly Baratheon, then later as his knight.

He is a man who hardly ever loses a joust (having bested Jamie Lannister himself), and is beloved by most women and small folk. He is all charm and graces, but some find him short-tempered and arrogant, as well. When he doesn't get his way, it is obvious, a bit of sourness showing on his face. This is usually only around nobility, which becomes more obvious as the series goes on. To most of the outside world, however, he attempts to embody the best 'knight in shining armor' he can, wearing a mask to shield himself from the outside world. With those that he truly cares about, though (Renly, Margaery), we see someone who is much more vulnerable, loving, open.

He wears his emotions on his sleeves, showing everything in his face. For example, after Brienne bests him, he is openly sullen with Renly, and makes crude jests against the woman, who is not considered a beauty. Another excellent example of his outward shield, and it failing, is when he walks Sansa to meet with his sister and grandmother. While openly pleasant with her and everything a knight should be, when she brings up Renly, and one of the men he killed in a fit of madness, he immediately becomes sullen and cross, and becomes cold to her. If he were better at playing the game, his mask would have remained in place, entirely--but he is still young, and not that good at schooling himself. He tries, but fails.

Also, as a homosexual man in a world where it is frowned upon (there are jokes made at Renly’s expense as his relationship with the other man is an open secret), there is almost an element of determination in him--to prove that he can be the better knight. Things are whispered behind his back, but he ignores them, proving himself on the battlefield and in the tournaments. He refuses to allow others to define him. It gives a sense of recklessness to him, as someone so eager to prove that he can be more than what others consider him to be. For example, when Tommen becomes king, Loras starts to train him in the ways of a knight--showing both affection and encouragement towards the young boy. Cersei is furious, thinking that Loras is ‘corrupting’ Tommen; but Loras continues, regardless.

Another great show of his recklessness, and the emotion behind his crafted control, is after Renly dies. He literally goes mad, and kills three of his fellow guardsmen in a fit of grief. Even though it is momentary, he loses his mind, control of his emotions, so much, that he destroys everything around him--so that his grief is shared. He feels guilty for the act, as well, which is shown in his conversation with Sansa; as previously stated, he closes himself off, showing pain.

Loras may have wanted for nothing, and is readily aware of his family’s fortune, but he does not see it as something to revel in--it is something to be used to help those around him--those he loves. It is clear that he adores/practically worships Renly--this is the man that he truly believes in with every fiber of his being. It can be inferred that it is his his relationship with Renly that causes the Tyrells to marry Margaery to the man, and throw their lot in with him. With someone else it might have seemed conniving, but Loras truly believed (still believes) that no one would be a better king than Renly--he has complete and utter faith in the man he loves, and simply wishes to see him rise to his full potential. This is in contrast to his sisters ambitions, that have less to do with Renly, than with her own desires, and those of the family.

Family is everything to Loras; when Cersei refuses to send ships to protect the Reach when it is attacked by the Greyjoys, Loras steps up to attack Dragonstone, as Cersei states that she will allow the ships there to go to the Reach if he is victorious. It is a trap; he leaves Margaery vulnerable by doing so, but protecting the family and giving his brothers a chance to save the Reach and its people is important.

It could be said, though, that it is not entirely selfless. As stated before, Loras is arrogant and impetuous. Part of him clearly wishes to strike out the seat of Stannis, the man who he now believes killed Renly. There is also glory in the act, as well, which he would be more than glad to capture.

After Renly dies, Loras is willing to do whatever it takes to give his sister, his family what it wants. With Renly gone, Loras clings to the one thing he has left--Margaery and House Tyrell. His own desires no longer matter--he is willing to sacrifice and do what he must for the honor and betterment of his house. To protect them. But still, he is a lover, and loyal. Renly never seems far from his thoughts, and it seems something died with his lover. When Tyrion asks why he is joining the Knightsguard, he tells him that while he loved once, “once the sun has set, no candle can replace it.”

It isn’t something he will ever get over, family honor or not.

Relationships Addendum

As Loras is not a POV character, a great deal of his personality has to be inferred by his interactions with other characters, and their observations of him.

Jamie

Jamie Lannister’s observations of Loras are some of the most interesting when revealing things of Loras’ personality. While much is viewed through Jamie’s own self-centered lense, Jamie realizes early on in his interactions with Loras in A Feast of Crows and A Storm of Swords, that they aren’t that different from one another. While Loras is petulant, arrogant, and seems entirely too self-confident in his eyes, he observes, “He answered truly. He is proud and reckless and full of piss, but he is not false. Not yet.” It is one of the most true observations of Loras within the novels. He is true--but there is no falseness in him. While Loras originally thinks that Brienne is the cause of Renly’s death, he allows Jamie to convince him to talk to the young woman, and admits that after the woman tells her story, he believes her. It is also through Jamie that Loras admits that while he isn’t much for reading books (no one ever said Loras is a brilliant sort of man), he remembers a book that Renly had, with people in ‘interesting positions’ --basically pornography. It’s another hint at how early his relationship with Renly must have started. [Headcanon: Dude to inferences, I believe it started around age 13] He also admits to Jamie that he buried Renly in a place that is only known to the two of them, and regardless who is king, he will serve them, but will never betray Renly in word or deed. His heart and loyalty will always belong to a dead man--but it does not mean that he will not do his duty. It is something tat Jamie admires in Loras--and Jamie’s admiration is not easily won.

Margaery

While Margaery is not a POV character, either, people’s observations of Loras and Margaery abound. People often comment that the two of them appear as twins, and it is Cersei’s own perversions that make her believe that perhaps they are sleeping together, due to their closeness, and Loras often spending the night guarding and/or sleeping in Margaery’s chambers. The closeness of their relationship can easily be seen in Margaery’s abject terror and grief over the news that Loras is gravely injured, screaming, “dying isn’t dead!” at Cersei. Compared to Garlan and Willas, Margaery and Loras are incredibly close, and it is obvious that both suffer when one is without the other.

COURT ALLIANCE & REASONING: [Seelie.] Loras has lived his entire life attempting to embody the best of all knightly characteristics. While the outward appearance is not always what truly lies beneath, Loras is, at his core, an idealistic man. Those ideals have been destroyed, in many ways, leaving him damaged and bruised, but despite all this, he believes that a knight can win the day, and can protect those who need protecting. That a knight with a strong and good heart can save his land, his people, his sister. It is the reason, after all, that he attacks Dragonstone. He can be vain, arrogant, but these are minor faults compared to his core chivalry.

ABILITIES:

*Fighting skills*: Loras is considered one of the best fighters in all of Westeros. While his primary skill is with a mace and sword, he is said to be skilled in all manner of weapons. Squired at an early age to Renly Baratheon, he has been working his entire life to become the best he can be, and is considered incredibly formidable.

*Charm*: "Half the girls in Westeros wish to bed him, and all boys wish to be him" -- Tyrion Lannister

Loras is a Tyrell, through and through, and has learned to use his fame and skill as a knight to win him favor of most people in Westeros. He knows how to speak sweetly to women, and to be congenial to men. While naturally a petulant boy, he covers that up in public, giving only an excellent, charming, knightly view of himself.

INVENTORY:

1 suit of armor + helm
2 cross bow shafts (that were previously in his body :3)
1 sword
1 rose brooch
1 set of normal clothing
1 Rainbow cloak

[The device turns on, revealing a young man who looks more than a bit confused, and above all else, exhausted. There is something pinched along the edges of his mouth, but he is doing his best to try and present something neutral to the world. His hazel eyes search the device as if it will show him something back, but…nothing.]

I was told me that this allows me to speak somehow to others here, trapped with me.

[A hand slides through curly blond hair, and he purses his lips, as if he’s unsure what to say. There is rage behind his eyes, his jaw setting. He controls his anger though--what good would it do, now? To yell at a screen that shows things to people he does not know.

Rage does not bring things back. Rage will not let him survive. He‘s learning that every day; so he‘ll bury the hurt down, let it simmer, and take a lesson from his sister; swallow the emotion and present a more reasoned face.]

I know not what this place is, or why I was deemed to be brought here. If this is one of the Seven Heavens or Hells...I do not think it would appear in such a way.

[It troubles him. But first--his thoughts need to be focused, on the one thing that matters, now. The thing he has left.]

If those who have taken me are listening, hear this. I am Ser Loras of the House Tyrell; if you have my sister, Margaery, I would hear of it. My life will be forfeit if you do.

[He has pride, but his sister matters most. He shall swallow what he must to gain her freedom if she is here at all. He has lost all other things--perhaps even his own life.]

I seek information; this seems working of the Old Gods. If they felt the need to save me, I would entreat them to tell me why.

LOG SAMPLE:

So the battle had been won; the Tyrell banner men were celebrating in the great hall with the Lannisters tonight--Loras knew he should have been with them, but he could not bring himself to feel joy at this. Yes, they had managed to strike out against Stannis, but there was nothing he could feel but a small, grim satisfaction.

Everything else was a hollow victory. Renly was still dead--nothing would bring his lover--his king back to life. And his darling Margaery? Was about to be married off to that monster Joffrey. He knew it had to be done; family came first, always, and with her secured as the Queen (and him protecting her, always), the alliance would forever bar Stannis from the throne, and give his father the power that he had always wished the Tyrell house to have.

Loras would do his duty to his House, to his sister--but that did not mean he was pleased with it. So instead of choosing to revel in the victory, he had bid his sister goodnight, and retired to his quarters in Kings Landing with a flagon of wine, to drink himself into a stupor, and be alone with his thoughts.

He wasn’t sure when he had fallen asleep, but as he laid on the warm bed, he knew it must have happened; after all, Renly was here….and this was the only way for them to be together, now. Since his death, he had only dreamed of Renly. Whether it be a nightmare (always unable to save him as he was slain, falling into darkness), or something more beautiful, it was always him.

Loras knew he shouldn’t indulge in these fantasies; it only made things more painful in the morning. But still, he couldn’t help himself as he rose to meet Renly’s kiss, hands moving slowly, carefully over every inch of skin he bared--as if he drew this out, as if he tried to make it last, it would. His King never spoke, but he never had to--his mouth, his body did all the talking for him. It felt like hours, the sensations real...but it was over all too soon, and it all faded into darkness.

He awoke with the sun, shifting in his bed, a tinge of melancholy as he felt his hand slide over his stomach. Always the same--always waking up alone.

Loras knew he had to get up, though, and face the day. Margaery needed to be protected. Only when she was well and truly safe, and they were free of all this turmoil, could he rest.
