Personality; Loras Tyrell is the third son and the House Tyrell. His family is proud, second in wealth only to the Lannisters. Due to this, he could have head relatively easy life in Highgarden, living out his days as a spoiled Lord, without many cares until the war came down. It is to his credit, and a great show his personality, that he didn’t choose that. He has always been a man who wished for glory, for all the things that a true chivalrous knight could become. Loras has trained to be a fighter since he was a child, first as the squire to Renly Baratheon, then later as his knight.
Due to hardly ever losing a turn in a joust (even having bested Jamie Lannister), and being considered one of the most beautiful men in Westeros, he can be perceived as arrogant. He can be, truly--but in some ways it is something that he wears for the outside world, much like his shining armor. When he is with those he truly cares about (Renly, Margaery), we see someone who is much more vulnerable, loving, open. He wears his emotions on his sleeves, showing everything in his face. For example, after Brienne bests him, he is openly sullen with Renly, and makes crude jests against the woman, who is not considered a beauty. Another excellent example of his outward shield, and it failing, is when he walks Sansa to meet with his sister and grandmother. While openly pleasant with her and everything a knight should be, when she brings up Renly, and one of the men he killed in a fit of madness, he immediately becomes sullen and cross, and becomes cold to her. If he were better at playing the game, his mask would have remained in place, entirely--but he is still young, and not that good at schooling himself. He tries, but fails.
Also, as a homosexual man in a world where it is frowned upon (there are jokes made at Renly’s expense as his relationship with the other man is an open secret), there is almost an element of determination in him--to prove that he can be the better knight. Things are whispered behind his back, but he ignores them, proving himself on the battlefield and in the tournaments. He refuses to allow others to define him. It gives a sense of recklessness to him, as someone so eager to prove that he can be more than what others consider him to be. Another great show of his recklessness, and the emotion behind his crafted control, is after Renly dies. He literally goes mad, and kills three of his fellow guardsmen in a fit of grief. Even though it is momentary, he loses his mind, control of his emotions, so much, that he destroys everything around him--so that his grief is shared.
Loras may have wanted for nothing, and is readily aware of his family’s fortune, but he does not see it as something to revel in--it is something to be used to help those around him--those he loves. It is clear that he adores/practically worships Renly--this is the man that he truly believes in with every fiber of his being. It is his relationship with Renly that causes the Tyrells to marry Margaery to the man, and throw their lot in with him. With someone else it might have seemed conniving, but Loras truly believed (still believes) that no one would be a better king than Renly--he has complete and utter faith in the man he loves, and simply wishes to see him rise to his full potential. This is in contrast to his sisters ambitions, that have less to do with Renly, than with her own desires, and those of the family.
After Renly dies, Loras is willing to do whatever it takes to give his sister, his family what it wants. With Renly gone, Loras clings to the one thing he has left--Margaery and House Tyrell. His own desires no longer matter--he is willing to sacrifice and do what he must for the honor and betterment of his house. To protect them.
But still, he is a lover, and loyal. Renly never seems far from his thoughts, and it seems something died with his lover. When Tyrion asks why he is joining the Knightsguard, he tells him that while he loved once, “once the sun has set, no candle can replace it.”
It isn’t something he will ever get over, family honor or not.

[The device turns on, revealing a young man who looks more than a bit confused, and above all else, exhausted. His blue eyes search the device as if it will show him something back, but…nothing.]
The young woman told me that this allows me to speak somehow to others here, trapped with me.
[A hand slides through curly blond hair, and he purses his lips, as if he’s unsure what to say. There is rage behind his eyes, his jaw setting. He controls his anger though--what good would it do, now? To yell at a screen that shows things to people he does not know.
Rage does not bring things back. He‘s learning that every day; so he‘ll bury the hurt down, let it simmer, and take a lesson from his sister; swallow the emotion and present a more reasoned face.]
I know not what this place is, or why I was deemed to be brought here. To be taken from Kings Landing in my sleep, that is a great sorcery indeed.
[The same sort of magic that could kill a King with shadows. It troubles him. But first--his thoughts need to be focused, on the one thing that matters, now. The thing he has left.]
If those who have taken me are listening, hear this. I am Ser Loras of the House Tyrell; if you have my sister, Margaery, return her from whence she came. My life will be forfeit if you do.
[He has pride, but his sister matters most. He shall swallow what he must to gain her freedom if she is here at all.]

So the battle had been won; the Tyrell banner men were celebrating in the great hall with the Lannisters tonight--Loras knew he should have been with them, but he could not bring himself to feel joy at this. Yes, they had managed to strike out against Stannis, but there was nothing he could feel but a small, grim satisfaction.
Everything else was a hollow victory. Renly was still dead--nothing would bring his lover--his king back to life. And his darling Margaery? Was about to be married off to that monster Joffrey. He knew it had to be done; family came first, always, and with her secured as the Queen (and him protect her, always), the alliance would forever bar Stannis from the throne, and give his father the power that he had always wished the Tyrell house to have.
Loras would do his duty to his House, to his sister--but that did not mean he was pleased with it. So instead of choosing to revel in the victory, he had bid his sister goodnight, and retired to his quarters in Kings Landing with a flagon of wine, to drink himself into a stupor, and be alone with his thoughts.
He wasn’t sure when he had fallen asleep, but as he laid on the warm bed, he knew it must have happened; after all, Renly was here….and this was the only way for them to be together, now. Since his death, he had only dreamed of Renly. Whether it be a nightmare (always unable to save him as he was slain, falling into darkness), or something more beautiful, it was always him.
Loras knew he shouldn’t indulge in these fantasies; it only made things more painful in the morning. But still, he couldn’t help himself as he rose to meet Renly’s kiss, hands moving slowly, carefully over every inch of skin he bared--as if he drew this out, as if he tried to make it last, it would. His King never spoke, but he never had to--his mouth, his body did all the talking for him. It felt like hours, the sensations real...but it was over all too soon, and it all faded into darkness.
He awoke with the sun, shifting in his bed, a tinge of melancholy as he felt his hand slide over his stomach. Always the same--always waking up alone.
Loras knew he had to get up, though, and face the day. Margaery needed to be protected. Only when she was well and truly safe, and they were free of all this turmoil, could he rest.
